House Max Liebermann
Sarajevo and the Balkan: between war and peace – Photographs 1991–1999
May 2, 2005 to May 26, 2005
Photo Exhibition
House Max Liebermann, Berlin
The civil war in the Balkan and the people affected by it are in the center of a photo exhibit by Mirko Krizanovic, shown in the House Max Liebermann in Berlin, and supported by the “Brandenburger Tor” (Brandenburg Gate) foundation.
64 black and white photographs illustrate situations, gestures, human beings. This is how Krizanovic, in a very intimate way, approaches a dialog with the people in their daily surroundings in this war-torn region in Central Europe. Krizanovic’s subtle pictorial language does not care to white-wash horror but instead offers a photographic glimpse into human conditions.
Between 1991 and 1999 Krizanovic made almost 10 trips to the Balkan region, either on assignment by the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, or on his own behalf. Born 1959 in Subotica in the Vojvodina (in the former Yugoslavia), Krizanovic had a double advantage over other photojournalists – he knew the language and he knew the region, making traveling and reporting under high-risk conditions easier. He successfully translated his close proximity to the action into his photographs.
