The fall of the wall – in the town of Obersuhl ! Unmatched excitement experienced only during events of historic proportions. German-German euphoria because of the peaceful revolution and hope for change. At the same time, a greatly mismanaged economy and total collapse continue in the East. The Russian provinces to which I used to travel with writer Elfie Siegel, my colleague from the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ ) reflect morbid scenes of enormous scope in this vast country.
